Welcome to a new episode of my podcast! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Schmelzer from Monte Bernardi. Michael, whom I affectionately call "Mr. Sangiovese," gives us an insight into the art of winemaking and his passion for the Sangiovese grape.
Mr. Sangiovese?
Monte Bernardi, located in Panzano in Chianti, was bought by the Schmelzer family in 2003. Michael, who grew up in the USA, brings a unique perspective to winemaking. He shares stories about the challenges and joys of winegrowing, especially when it comes to different vintages, like the amazing 2015.
A special highlight of our chat was the introduction of a new wine from the vineyards above Panzano. This 100% Sangiovese from these older vineyards has a distinctive plum and blood orange flavor. This variety and the differences from other Monte Bernardi wines really show off the versatility of the terroir and what makes Sangiovese so special. Michael emphasizes the importance of traditional methods and respecting nature. His philosophy of interfering as little as possible with the vines' growth to maintain their natural balance is reflected in the quality and authenticity of his wines.
Monte Bernardi also makes wines from international grape varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which Michael was initially skeptical about. However, he realized that these wines can help highlight the unique characteristics of Panzano's terroir and make them accessible to a wider audience.
We also talk about the future of Chianti Classico and how important it is to preserve and highlight the unique qualities of the Sangiovese grape. Michael's approach and his dedication to traditional winemaking offer some valuable insights.
