Flavors in Your Glass

When I'm at wine tastings, people often ask me how to get good at picking out all those subtle smells in wine. From what I've found, the trick is to really pay attention to scents – not just in wine, but in everything around you every day. Whether you're cooking, grocery shopping, or just enjoying a meal, it helps to consciously notice those smells and save them in your memory, almost like taking a mental picture.

To help others get a better grasp of this amazing world of aromas, I started a special project. My photographer, Eva-Maria Mrazek, and I filled little jars with common smells you find in wines. These jars are super helpful for beginners, giving them something to see and smell so they can more easily spot those scents in their wine.

The whole idea behind this project is to help people sharpen their senses and really enjoy wine tasting more. As you practice, you'll start to pick up on all sorts of aromas in different wines, and that training will stick with you as a really valuable skill.
