The president of the Unione Viticoltori di Panzano is Cosimo Gericke, owner of the Fattoria di Rignana winery. He represents the interests of the members of the Unione to the world. One of the main objectives is to preserve agriculture in the region in a biological and sustainable way. The winegrowers are convinced that the quality of their products depends on the well-being of the nature. They know that the "Panzano sostenibile" project is crucial for their future.
Nina & Panzano in Chianti
"Nina in Chianti" is the name of my website - and there is no coincidence. I spend alltogether two months of the year in Panzano. On the one hand I simply like being here, but first of all in order to visit "my winemakers". To learn more from them - about the new vintages and about everything that's going on in the wine cellar and in the vineyards. And many of them have become my friends over the years.
The wine festival
The "Vino al Vino" wine festival which takes place at the Piazza of Panzano in Chianti is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the wine year. The 21 Unione winegrowers organise this event every year during the third weekend of September. For a total of four days you can taste the wines of the Unione winegrowers - including many renowned and excellent wines - and indulge in culinary delicacies and simply enjoy life.
Panzano is No. 1 Organic District in Italy
Sustainable thinking has found a "fertile ground" in Panzano. The majority of the wineries are certified organic. Some go one step further and even work biodynamically. In addition, the "Stazione Sperimentale per la Viticoltura" - or "SPEVIS" for short - provides technical support for the switch to "organic". All these measures have led to Panzano being described in the international wine press as "Italy's first organic district".
Art in Panzano
Wine and art are two things that can be enjoyed together in a perfect way. And thus under the motto "Panzano Arte" in 2019 for the first time in Panzano are exhibited throughout the summer 30 sculptures and three large-format photographic works from the French artist Nathalie Decoster. And not in a museum or gallery, but exactly where life keeps boiling in Chianti Classico: on the piazza, on different places throughout the city, in the vineyards of the four participating wineries, and in the nature - simply outside.
At the Piazza you can feel the heart of Panzano in Chianti beating! Here you will find everything you need for a (good) life. And an important part of it is Mimmo´s Enoteca Baldi. Here you can stop at lunchtime for a snack and a glass of Franciacorta, and in the evening for a delicious pasta and a glass of wine. Whether at a table under the trees right next to the fountain or inside at the bar - here you can simply enjoy life!
Bar La Curva
Bar La Curva is situated directly opposite the piazza, in the middle of the curve. Here you can meet for a cappuccino or a quick espresso which in my opinion is the best in the whole Chianti. And a brioche and a gossip - simply perfetto. A tip for all the gourmands - the owner Salvatore also makes an excellent gelato. There are also many nice souvenirs to buy.
Holiday in Panzano
Tuscany is an absolute dream destination for many people. Stroll through the Uffizi in Florence. Enjoy a gelato in the shell-shaped piazza of Siena. Take a walk through the vineyards during the sunset. Dreams become reality during a holiday in Panzano in Chianti. And the right contact is Karin Dietz and her agency "Chianti & more".
Unione Viticoltori di Panzano
The "Unione Viticoltori di Panzano" is the union of 22 winegrowers from Panzano in Chianti. It was founded in 1995 with the common goal of maintaining and improving the quality of the wines. Mainly through sustainable and organic viticulture. The exchange of experience and knowledge, the chance to present themselves together, but also the friendships that they have developed, make the Unione a strong association in Chianti Classico.
Panzano in Chianti
Tuscany is a longing destination for travellers from all over the world. And right in the middle lies the small village of Panzano in Chianti - halfway between Florence and Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico. At a first glance it is a typical Tuscan village: a church, a piazza, a café, a few small restaurants and shops. But if you take a closer look, you will discover many charming sides, exciting people and of course great winemakers and wines.
In the world of Gallo Nero
The main actor in terms of enjoyment in Panzano is the "vino rosso" - the red wine! First and foremost the Chianti Classico in its three quality levels: Chianti Classico, Riserva and Gran Selezione. The three of them reply to strict production conditions. And all three are marked with the Gallo Nero sign - the black cock. Of course you can also find fruity white wines and Rosati, noble "Super-Tuscans", heavenly Vin Santo and not at least the Olio di Oliva extra vergine. These are all top quality products from the world of Gallo Nero!
The golden valley of Panzano
The golden valley of Panzano - the so-called Conca d'Oro - extends in a form of a shell below the village of Panzano and is a golden ground for absolute top wines! It is the ideal place for wine growing thanks to its special landscape. The vineyards at the back of the valley are also becoming increasingly important especially regarding the global warming. Because the grapes have more time to ripen in peace where the vines are not continuously exposed to the heat.
Dario Checchini is probably the most famous inhabitant of Panzano. Recently he became part of the Netflix documentary series Chef´s Table, in which top gastronomes from all over the world present their kitchen concepts. Because his Antica Macelleria Cecchini is not only a butcher's shop, but also a restaurant with three food concepts: in the Officina della Bistecca is served his famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina, in the Solociccia you get "only meat" and in the "Dario Doc" you can taste the burger without bread. In addition, spicy paprika sauce, creamy-sweet mustard and Dario who plays the trumpet.
Enoteca Il Cardo
Il Cardo which is something between café, bistro, wine bar and restaurant invites you on the other part of the Piaza to eat, drink and buy some ( wine). Over the years Il Cardo has developed its concept into a real vinotheque. Here you can taste wines from practically all the winemakers part of the Unione di Vitcoltori di Panzano, not only by the glass, but also by the bottle.
As far as meat and sausages are concerned, there is another important institution in Panzano: the Macelleria Checcucci. It has a new address since recently and is situated in Via Giovanni da Verrazzano. The Panzanese buy their meat, the best prosciutto in Chianti and many other delicacies from Filippo Checcucci, or Pippo - as he is affectionately called. And a secret tip: Mama Checcucci cooks real "Cucina Toscana" for lunch. Every single dish is a poem!
