Fattoria Casaloste
in Panzano in Chianti
When you turn onto the gently winding path, lined by a small stone wall, you might not realize what a wonderful little wine gem awaits you here amidst the hills of Panzano in Chianti. The owner of the winery, which describes itself with the motto 'La piccola fattoria dei grandi vini' (the small winery of great wines), is Giovanni Battista d'Orsi. Together with his wife Emilia, the trained agronomist and oenologist runs Fattoria Casaloste.
A Wine Gem in Tuscany
These two are originally from Naples, and they stumbled upon 'Casaloste' during a visit to Chianti Classico and totally fell in love with this little piece of land. Long story short: they bought the winery in 1992, moved to Panzano, and immediately poured all their passion into making wine. Casaloste covers 19 hectares in total, with about 10.5 hectares planted with grapevines and two hectares with olive trees.
The Organic Pioneers
From day one, Giovanni Battista d'Orsi knew his winery had to be organic. And he did just that! In 1994, Casaloste became the first certified organic winery in Panzano. That means no chemical sprays are used here. Plus, all the energy for the cellar, vineyards, and agriturismo comes from solar panels. With its organic certification, Fattoria Casaloste was also a trailblazer for what's now called the "Organic District" in and around Panzano in Chianti. And naturally, Casaloste is a proud member of the Unione di Viticoltori di Panzano, an association dedicated to organic practices.
The Vineyards
Casaloste's vineyards are nestled along the road from Panzano to Greve in Chianti. Because the vines grow in slightly lower spots than many other wineries in Panzano – right in the Greve valley – their wines develop a truly unique character and personality. And it's no surprise that the individual vineyard plots have cool names like "Snake Vineyard" or "Cherry Vineyard." Here's a fun detail: the native Sangiovese grape is definitely the star at Casaloste, making up 85 percent of all their vines. You'll also find a little Merlot, and just tiny bits of Ancelotta and Canaiolo.
The Small Winery...
Their wines, made from top-notch organic grapes, are seriously impressive! Leading the way is, of course, the Chianti Classico, crafted from 90 percent Sangiovese and ten percent Merlot. Next up is the Chianti Classico Riserva, which is 95 percent Sangiovese, rounded out with a blend of five percent Merlot and other varieties. And since the 2011 vintage, they've also offered the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "Casaloste," made 100 percent from Sangiovese grapes sourced from different vineyards.
... with Great Wines
The grapes for "Don Vincenzo" come from a single vineyard plot. Then there's the Inversus Toscana IGT, which has an "inverse" blend compared to the Chianti Classico: it's 90 percent Merlot and ten percent Sangiovese. All in all, Casaloste's wines have a unique style – they're rich, full-bodied, and wonderfully spicy. And for an authentic Tuscan meal, you can't forget a first-class olive oil – like Casaloste's cold-pressed Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva.
Beautiful Naples Meets...
Emilia and Giovanni are completely dedicated to Panzano, but you can definitely feel and see their Neapolitan heritage at Casaloste. You'll even spot Mount Vesuvius on their bottle labels, and the winery itself has a lovely Neapolitan vibe: San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, has his own special place at Casaloste. Emilia and Giovanni truly believe that Naples' patron saint also extends his protective hand over Panzano – they say that even when it's raining and hailing everywhere else, the sun is always shining in Panzano, thanks to San Gennaro!
... Beautiful Tuscany
Here's another example: Don Vincenzo, the name of one of their Gran Selezione wines, was Giovanni's father. And you'll also experience that typical "Naples" hospitality when you visit Casaloste: two small, beautifully furnished apartments and a pool surrounded by olive trees welcome guests to enjoy their vacation right here at Casaloste in Panzano in Chianti.
