Il Palagio di Panzano
Panzano in Chianti
Wine in the glass...
In Panzano in Chianti, in the prime "Conca d'Oro" spot, Monia and Franco Piccini make amazing red wines at their "Il Palagio di Panzano" winery: a delightful Chianti Classico, a fancy Chianti Classico Riserva, a superb Gran Selezione called "Le Bambole," and the elegant Torgentile, which is half Sangiovese and half Merlot. Since 2017, they've also got a Rosato in their range called Aldemara, named after their grandma. Besides wine, making olive oil is Monia's other big passion.
... Panzano in their blood
And these two winemakers are super passionate and have Panzano in their blood: they're true Panzanesi! Meaning, they were born and grew up right here. They live and work here with their two daughters – on one of the most stunning places on Earth: right in the heart of Tuscany, in the Chianti Classico wine region, in the small village of Panzano, halfway between Florence and Siena. Il Palagio di Panzano is surrounded by just under eight hectares of vineyards where only Sangiovese grows, and another three hectares are home to olive trees. Organic farming and being gentle with nature's resources are the two super important pillars of Il Palagio di Panzano's philosophy.
100% Tuscany
The winery and guesthouse are in a classic Tuscan estate, built around the year 1000 using local stones. These centuries-old walls used to be where Duke Totto of Panzano lived, before Dario Piccini turned the property into a winery in the 60s. Now, this lovely estate, just a few kilometers from Greve in Chianti, has been in the Piccini family for three generations. Since 2004, Monia and Franco have been putting all their love and effort into the wines and the place.
Organic Sangiovese
The very first Chianti Classico, made by Monia and Franco back in 2007, was a huge joy for the whole family! It was the only Chianti Classico from that year to get the top rating from the famous wine guide "Gambero Rosso." This big win gave them a huge boost, and they kept making wonderfully balanced wines in the years that followed. Truly believing that sustainable practices are the only way forward for winemaking, Il Palagio di Panzano switched to organic farming in 2009. They finally got their official organic certification in 2013. So, it's no surprise that Panzano is known as Italy's ultimate organic district!
Red Wines & Rosato
Both in the vineyard and in the cellar at Il Palagio di Panzano, Monia and Franco are all about natural processes and separate winemaking for each plot. This helps them really highlight what makes each spot special. The wines first age in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures, holding between 50 and 100 hectoliters. Then they move to oak barrels, where they're super careful to keep those classic Sangiovese flavors and make sure each wine gets its own unique aging journey.
A Tuscan Fairytale
Il Palagio di Panzano feels like a little stone fortress. But with all its cozy corners, secret spots, courtyards, tons of terraces, and a magical garden, the villa is totally a fairytale castle. And you might even bump into the two princesses, Giorgia and Gianna, the daughters of the family, who have the Gran Selezione called "Le Bambole" named after them. The estate has super charming apartments, perfect for a vacation – a week, two, or even longer... And honestly, just the pool with its view over the Conca d'Oro, the "Golden Valley," will make you fall head over heels for Il Palagio right away.
