New at Nina in Chianti: Wines from Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti!

Piero Lanza from the Poggerino winery with 'his' concrete egg

As you know, I'm always on the hunt for new wineries and exciting Chianti Classico wines. So, during one of my recent visits to a trade fair, I 'stumbled' upon a wine – or actually, a whole winery – during a blind tasting that really blew me away. That winery is Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti. And guess what? The excellent Poggerino wines are now available in the online shop!

Fattoria Poggerino: Amazing Wines & Wonderful People!

Piero and John from the Poggerino winery, and Nina in Chianti

When I think of Fattoria Poggerino , two things immediately pop into my head: First, of course, the fantastic wines, crafted with incredible dedication and passion by Piero Lanza, the owner of Fattoria Poggerino. And then, I think of the beautiful Bed & Breakfast run by Benedetta, Piero's sister.

Honestly, it's the people who truly make Poggerino so special. Take John, for instance. He handles all the organizational stuff with so much patience, warmth, and always a big smile on his face: from greeting guests and managing wine orders from all over the world to patiently answering all my questions... (Thanks, John!)

And then, of course, there's Stefano. He lends a hand to Piero in both the vineyard and the cellar, and he's in charge of everything that grows and flourishes in the gardens. Fun fact: he's also a super passionate pumpkin grower! Poggerino actually owes Italy's biggest pumpkin, a whopping 849 kilos, to Stefano's green thumb. And it's all organic, naturally! Which, by the way, goes for the wines too.

Sangiovese Wines with Their Own Unique and Innovative Style

But let's get back to the main event: the wines! When it comes to Poggerino, it's all about Her Majesty Sangiovese! This native Tuscan grape variety grows on 11 out of their 12 hectares of vineyards. Add one hectare of Merlot, and that's it! This strong focus on Sangiovese definitely shows in their wine selection.

One really special wine among Poggerino's collection is the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo. This Chianti Classico doesn't age in traditional oak barrels; instead, it matures in a cement egg. And as unusual as that might sound, trust me, this wine is absolutely fantastic! It's a Sangiovese wine par excellence! If you're curious to learn more about this unique production method for the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, just check out the detailed wine description.

Of course, Poggerino's range also features a 'regular' Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva called 'Bugialla'. Plus, there's the Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso, a classic IGT that's pretty much their house wine. But here's what all these reds share: they're all made from 100 percent Sangiovese.

The Merlot grapes are used for Poggerino's Supertuscan – the 'Primamateria'. Piero blends Merlot and Sangiovese for it, usually in about a 50:50 ratio.

Radda in Chianti: (Almost) New Ground for Nina in Chianti

I'm totally aware that with Fattoria Poggerino, I'm bringing in a winery from Radda in Chianti for the first time. It means I'm venturing a little further beyond the borders of 'my' Panzano. But here's the thing: Radda, with its slightly rougher hills and edgier wines, adds a whole new dimension to my selection.

What's more, Fattoria Poggerino is a winery that produces incredibly high-quality products. And that's exactly what NinaInChianti.com is all about: Nina-tested top quality. Because, of course, I've personally tasted every single wine you'll now find in the shop! So, here's to that: Salute! Benvenuto Poggerino!
