Poggio al Sole
“Poggio al Sole” translates to “Hill in the Sun.” And that perfectly describes the winery that proudly bears this lovely name! Poggio al Sole, owned by the Swiss Davaz family, sits at the highest point of a sun-drenched hill right in the unique landscape of Chianti Classico. To be more precise, the estate spans 70 hectares between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. Today, Poggio al Sole's vineyards cover 24 hectares of gently rolling hillsides, facing southeast to southwest, all around the estate.
A Winery with History
Johannes, who is both an agronomist and an oenologist (basically, he knows everything about farming and winemaking!), comes from a well-known Swiss winemaking family. And Poggio al Sole itself has a long history: documents in the archives of the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey show that wine and olives were already being cultivated here way back in the 12th century. In 1990, Kathrin and Johannes bought the winery “following a spontaneous impulse” and have been expanding it ever since. For the past few years, they've been getting great support at both the winery and the agriturismo from their son Valentino and his wife Steffi.
Thinking Outside the Box
Poggio al Sole bottles an average of 100,000 bottles of wine each year, always striving to treat nature and its resources with care. This starts with generating their own electricity from a solar plant and extends to the sustainable management of their vineyards. All their wines have been organically certified since the 2016 vintage. Johannes also shows his innovative and forward-thinking spirit by using his own pruning method: “Albarello modificato.” While typically two or four shoots are left during pruning, Johannes believes that three is the perfect number for the optimal development of the vines and grapes.
Super Modern
Sangiovese grapes grow on 14 of the total 24 hectares of vineyards. But Canaiolo, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay also thrive wonderfully on the Galestro soil, which is typical for Chianti Classico. Johannes has also put a lot of work into the cellar: the "old" cellar was built in 1972. Back then, it processed grapes from about 10 hectares of vineyards. When the vineyards expanded in 2004, the cellar got bigger too. Today, there's a fermentation cellar with steel tanks and an aging cellar with barriques – all super modern. You can even book a tour of the wine cellar with a tasting at Poggio al Sole!
Chianti Classico Casasilia
Poggio al Sole offers eight different wines: five reds, a Rosato called Primavera (made from 100% Sangiovese), and two whites – the Chiara, a pure Chardonnay, and the Sangiovese Bianco, a Blanc de Noir made from Sangiovese grapes. But, as you'd expect, the Chianti Classico takes center stage: 90 percent Sangiovese and 10 percent Canaiolo give this red wine its classic character. A special highlight is the wine called Casasilia, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione made from 100 percent Sangiovese, which is definitely considered Poggio al Sole's top wine. Interestingly, the name Casasilia harks back to when the winery belonged to the Badia a Passignano Abbey and shared the same name.
Catchy Names, Elegant Wines
The Trittico, Poggio al Sole's 'house wine,' brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese grapes – that's where the 'Tri' in the name comes from, pointing to the three grape varieties used. The Syrah IGT, on the other hand, is, as the name suggests, 100 percent Syrah grapes. The range is completed by the Ponente, which is made from equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, all grown on the opposite hill. Plus, Poggio al Sole also produces high-quality olive oil – no surprise there, with around 1,500 shimmering silver-grey olive trees thriving here!
