Rocca di Montegrossi Winery
Chianti Classico with Lots of Tradition and Even More Sustainability
“Modern meets tradition” – that's a phrase you hear a lot when talking about wine and Chianti Classico. And it might be especially true for the Rocca di Montegrossi winery. Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, who owns the winery, has deep roots in Chianti Classico tradition thanks to his family, the Barone Ricasoli. But he's also a modern guy who focuses a lot on sustainability. It's a modern mindset applied to a cherished tradition.
Rocca di Montegrossi is located in Monti in Chianti and spans about 100 hectares. Around 20 hectares are vineyards, and another 20 hectares are olive groves (with about 1,000 trees!) for their amazing cold-pressed olive oil. The rest is forest. The star grape of the estate is, naturally, Sangiovese, which forms the base of their "flagship" Chianti Classico, blended with other native Tuscan grapes like Canaiolo and Colorino. As a descendant of the historic Ricasoli noble family, it's no surprise that Marco loves "his land," which has been owned by his family for generations. One of his ancestors is Bettino Ricasoli, a really important person not just for Chianti, but for all of Italy.
Sustainability as a Calling
Marco is super passionate about how diverse and expressive this region between Florence and Siena is. For him, organic farming at Rocca di Montegrossi is practically a no-brainer. Since the 2011 vintage, their wines have even carried the organic certification. But sustainability means even more to Marco. For example, rainwater is collected in big cisterns and used for all the important cleaning in the cellar instead of drinking water. And solar panels on the roof power all the cellar tech! So, when you enjoy Rocca di Montegrossi wines, you're not just getting amazing, award-winning quality in your glass, but also a clear conscience for our environment! With that in mind: Viva il Chianti Classico!🍷
